HISTORY

Incorporated in 1984 and opened to visitors in 1986, the Louisiana Children's Museum is in its 20th year of service to the New Orleans community. Located in the historic Warehouse and Museum District, the Museum was originally housed in a 6,000 square foot rented area on the third floor of the building it currently occupies. The Museum quickly expanded to 8,000 square feet and attracted approximately 110,000 visitors annually.

In 1994, the Board of Directors purchased the entire building and expanded the Museum into the renovated 45,000 square foot space. In order to meet the middle school curriculum, the Museum's mission and philosophy were altered to attract older children up to the age of twelve. This goal was accomplished by developing interactive exhibits in physics and mathematics. New programmatic areas included programs in theater and art. Outreach lessons were added to Museum offerings that same year, in an effort to reach out into the community and share interactive learning.

Today, exhibits and programs occupy 30,000 square feet of floor space within the building. The first floor is primarily geared to children between the ages of eight and twelve. The Lab, a science and physics area, and Healthy Lifestyle Choices, a health education exhibit, are the main attractions. The third floor is primarily for toddlers and elementary-aged children. Additionally, on this floor is Art Trek - an art room where process-oriented lessons transpire daily - and a traveling exhibit gallery. The Museum currently boasts five different outreach programs. In house and off-site attendance is approximately 190,000.
