2010 Summer Camps

We provide a safe, fun and educational space from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with Before and After Care available. Summer camps are designed for children ages 5 through 8.  We encourage parents to send their children with healthy lunches and drinks.  Morning snacks are provided.

Camp Tuition:

LCM Member Price: $160 per week

Non-Member Price: $185 per week

Before and After Care is also available.

 

Before and after care payments will be handled on a day-by-day basis. If you know that you will be utilizing these services for the whole week please pay at the beginning of the week.

 

Before Care: 7:45 a.m.-9:00 a.m. ($5 per day)

After Care: 3:00 p.m.-5:15 p.m. ($10 per day)

 

All campers must bring a lunch from home with a drink.

Morning snacks are provided by the Museum.

 

All campers must be five years old by June 1st and cannot turn ten until after August 1st.

 

 

Please Note:

For your child’s own enjoyment, we recommend no more than four consecutive weeks of summer camp at the Louisiana Children’s Museum.

 

June 7 - 11

Puppetry Camp

Create hand puppets, stick puppets, sock puppets and more! Learn basic puppetry techniques, character development and dramatic play as campers perform with their very own puppets! (Ages 5-9)

Art Trek - "LET'S BOOK!" Camp
Design and illustrate your own picture books; create a mini library of assorted books designed and illustrated by you! Begin with a  "Book about Me", illustrate the  Song "What A Wonderful World" by New Orleans' very own Louis Armstrong , log your journey with a mixed media collage travel journal, illustrate a favorite recipe, and create your own graphic novel/comic strip. Learn the mechanics and language of bookmaking and design: cut and paste layouts, edit and work with script and image.  Learn about ookbinding. (Ages 6 -9)

June 14 - 18

Performance Camp

Using movement and music, this week long exploration in performance teaches campers about different types of music, acting and what it takes to put on a great show! (Ages 6-9)

 

June 21 - 25

Architecture Camp

Build a building! Through the Museum exhibits and art activities, learn what it takes to make a stable structure. Design projects and learn about color, space and floor plans. (Ages 6-9)

 

Art Trek Camp - TEXTILE ARTS
Fundamentals of textile design through patterns, printmaking ,and effective use of color; camouflage and patterns of nature; block printing on fabric; batik; design your own gift wrapping paper/wallpaper(Walter Anderson); trace and repeat a pattern with familiar local ocons.  For example: sno-Cones and streetcars (Andy Warhol); design a T-shirt.

June 28 - July 2

Dinosaurs Rock!

Campers will unearth dinosaur fossils like real paleontologists, learn what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur and not a mammal, and figure out how much a dinosaur weighs and more! (Ages 5-8)

July 5 – 9

Kitchen Chemistry Camp

Spend a week as a mad scientist. Learn about chemical reactions and make a few or your own using household ingredients. Make slime, oobleck, elephant toothpaste and learn about the scientific principles behind your creations. (Ages 6-9)

Art Trek Camp - ENVIRO-ARTS
Re-cycle, re-think and re-create a better Environment through art awareness; trace your "Carbon Footprint" and make your world a better place; create a group mural on canvas; use everyday objects to make art; create Folk Art (Willie Birch); poster art; design your own seed packets;  create a weather wheel; paint a still life of fruit, vegetables, and flowers; design a Mosaic with seeds.(Ages 6 – 9)

July 12 – 16

Elements of Earth

Explore our world! Campers get to investigate the many uses of water and wind on our planet. Make bubbles, pinwheels and more while also learning different recycling techniques and reusable sources of energy.

July 19 -23

Outer Space Camp

Wish upon a star and travel into outer space! Learn about the planets, stars, and solar system through various activities and the star lab. Make space shuttles, balloon rockets, gliders and more! (Ages 5-8)

 

Art Trek Camp - HUNTERS AND STORYTELLERS
Cave painting and storytelling through ancient methods of art. Learn about pigments, make your own paint, and learn basics of Faux Art techniques to create your own rock paintings; Aboriginal Art: connect the dots with the Ancestral  Art of "Dreamtime"; animal tracks; Create a musical instrument and decorate it with tribal patterns.

July 26 -30

Around the World

Travel around the world in five days! Experience different cultures, cuisine and art of countries from every corner of the globe. (Ages 5-9)

August 2 -6

Louisiana Culture

Learn about Louisiana culture and the people who inhabit the “Boot State.” Explore Cajun food, Louisiana festivals and the history of New Orleans through art, activities and museum exhibits. (Ages 5-9)

Art Trek Camp - VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY
Historical Art: Create two-dimensional art documenting the life of ancient voyagers; Make clay friezes of Ancient Greece/Egypt; topography; map it out with a Papier Mache globe of the world. Learn about the continents above and below the equator; illustrate a real or imaginary place you discovered on your journey; pirate treasure hunt with a  self-made map to the treasure chest. Coin rubbings used for "gold". (Ages 6 – 9)
