The Meraux Foundation Supports the Power of Play

Foundation makes grand gesture to benefit the children of St. Bernard Parish

The Arlene & Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation, Inc., has graciously agreed to support Play Power, formerly known as Play Helps TM, a therapeutic play program offered by the Louisiana Children’s Museum (LCM) at the Andrew Jackson Elementary School in St. Bernard Parish.

Play Power offers children and parents open-ended play activities, including block building, painting, storytelling, puppetry and music. Temporary Play Domes built on the grounds of the Andrew Jackson School provide a haven for imagination, creativity and learning.

Play Helps TM debuted in St. Bernard Parish on December 1, 2006, as a way to bring relief and positive play experiences to children living in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Because of the program’s immediate success and the continuing need of the children in St. Bernard Parish, LCM sought help from the Arlene & Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation to continue the program beyond the initial funded period. The foundation graciously agreed to help extend the program through the end of the 2007 academic school year.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) and The Toy Industry Foundation (TIF), in collaboration with the Association of Children’s Museums, created Play Helps TM, a “portable” children’s museum housed in geodesic domes, to be established in areas impacted by a disaster. Play Helps TM focuses the importance of learning through play and reaches children who do not have access to play opportunities that can further their learning and quality of life.

For more than two decades, the Louisiana Children's Museum has promoted hands-on participatory learning for children of all ages. Encouraging discovery through observation, inquiry, creative construction, role-playing, problem-solving, and free play, the Museum motivates children to develop their cognitive, physical and social skills, while enjoying fruitful interaction with adults and peers. Post-Katrina, the Louisiana Children Museum’s role in the development of our children has become even more vital, developing into a place where children can re-connect with their families and where, together, they can learn and heal through therapeutic play.
