Louisiana Children’s Museum Welcomes its 100,000th Post-Katrina Visitor The Louisiana Children’s Museum is excited and proud to welcome through its distinctive blue shutters its 100,000th post-Katrina visitor, just months before the one-year anniversary of its post-Katrina reopening. “This is a significant milestone for the city of New Orleans and the Museum,” Executive Director Julia Bland said, “as we all remember a time when the city had no children here.” Torrance Deary, a second grade student from Airline Park Elementary School, was surprised but “excited” by the honor. Deary received a family membership to the Louisiana Children’s Museum and a bag of Museum goodies. After floodwaters washed away many community playgrounds, local children had few safe places to play. As soon as it repaired its own hurricane damage, the Louisiana Children’s Museum stepped up to the plate, adapting its role in the community to become more of a safe haven for children throughout the Gulf Coast. By offering children and their families a normal, healthy experience that celebrates childhood and values play, the Louisiana’s Children Museum has taken the initiative to provide a sense of community and stability for our children and their parents, all of whom are still recovering from the most devastating natural disaster to hit the United States. The Louisiana Children’s Museum’s unique role in the New Orleans community has always focused on encouraging, educating, and supporting families. And never has its role been more vital than in the post-Katrina landscape. “The Louisiana Children’s Museum has truly become a place where children can re-connect with their families and where, together, they can learn and heal through therapeutic play,” Bland said. The Louisiana Children’s Museum suffered nearly $1 million in Katrina-related damage. Since reopening last June, the Louisiana Children’s Museum has averaged 500 visitors each weekday, with an even higher attendance on weekends. The Museum shattered records when more than 5,000 families and children came together to re-connect and play on the weekend of the Museum’s grand re-opening. “Since re-opening, the Museum’s attendance has consistently rivaled pre-Katrina numbers,” Bland said. “This just shows the value our exhibits and outreach programs offer and the important role we play in the lives of our area children and families,” Bland said. The Museum will officially celebrate the first anniversary of its re-opening with a festive celebration on June 23. For more information, please call 523-1357.
